Samuel Hailey-Watts and his eventful years studying at the Glasgow School of Art.

On the 23rd of May 2014 a fire broke out in the basement of the Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art. One of our ex-students - Samuel Hailey-Watts - was one of those who lost everything in the fire that destroyed a part of the building. He says “This incident happened just 4 hours before the deadline of the annual degree show. Studying at the GSA was definitely an eventful 4 years of my life - we saw the school go through a series of transitions so to see it end with such an event was strangely fitting, even though it was definitely a tragic affair.”

“I had set up two installations for the degree show, one got destroyed by the sheer amount of smoke and water damage. I was using a lot of electronic equipment, so much of the devices were unsafe to use again. In the other space everything was completely destroyed.”

“As for what I am doing now and what’s coming up, I’ll be making a new series of works for 4 months in Leipzig, Germany, where I have a residency at the Hochschule Fur Grafik and Buchkunst. The work I make there will be on show in Glasgow too at some point in late March.”
