Varndean College sees student support as central to your success at College. We have a team of personal tutors who have chosen to specialise in this work and who have developed particular expertise in this area. A Student Progress Advisor works with them to support you during difficult transition times at College. Your personal tutor will support you throughout your course through weekly meetings which include Improve your Own Learning sessions to help you get the most out of College and prepare you for your next step, whether that is employment or Higher Education. You will also have a Student Progress Leader who will oversee your time here.

We have a Welfare Officer who provides a supportive information service to help you sort out problems with finance, accomodation, travel and any other practical difficulties that could interfere with your study.
You can use the Careers Centre to access videos and databases. The College has an experienced careers team to help you. There is extensive support whether, you want to progress to Higher Education or move into employment. The College has been given a Committed to Careers award.
The College has developed excellent links with local businesses and organisations and can arrange work experience for you. Students have been able to work in a wide range of settings including the ambulance service, education, media, engineering and many more.
Oxbridge, medicine and veterinary applications
There is specially tailored support for students who want to apply for these high demand universities and courses. We try to be just as supportive for all applications to HE and employment, but add a little more for these high demand areas including medicine where there’s also specialist support available.

There are many issues which could affect your emotional life when you are at College. Our fully trained and qualified Counsellors are experienced at working with students in one-to-one confidential counselling sessions.
The VCSU (Varndean College Students Union) is very active in ensuring that your views are considered and acted upon, and that your social life at College is a ull one. You can become involved in the NUS, whether it’s organising social events like the Leavers’ Party, lobbying against tuition fees, raising money for charity, or being a student governor. Even if you don’t get involved there are lots of ways in which the work of the NUS will touch your life at Varndean!

- Teachers have worked successfully to ensure that progress made from starting points by students on A Level courses remains outstanding and that progress on the International Baccalaureate course is also outstanding.
- Students studying at Level 3 benefit from a broad curriculum choice that allows a good range of combinations of academic and vocational courses, in addition to the highly successful International Baccalaureate programme.
- Students enjoy being at the college and value very highly the inclusive, tranquil atmosphere.
- Teaching, learning and assessment are of a consistently high standard and students enjoy the vibrant and challenging lessons they attend.
