FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE WITH TRAVEL COSTS

Students who live more than 2 miles from the college may apply for help from college with their travel costs from our Discretionary Learning Grant. Conditions apply.  

  • Students with special educational needs or a disability may qualify for extra help and should check their council’s website above.
  • In the event of an unexpected event that causes hardship ie redundancy or an accident, please see the Welfare Adviser who can offer advice re emergency funding.
  • We not pay for travel during the holidays and students should be aware that they will need to cover their own travel costs for the first few weeks of college.

DISCOUNTED RAIL TRAVEL

If you travel between Brighton or Preston Park from/to:
Eastbourne, Lancing, Lewes, Newhaven, Seaford, Southwick, Shoreham-by-Sea and East Worthing.
The cheapest ticket is a Unizone ticket. To obtain a Unizone ticket you will need to have a valid NUS card or College ID card and a 16-25 RailCard (www.16-25railcard.co.uk) and buy your ticket at the counter of a station within the area (not at a ticket machine). Each term you will be entitled to 3 x 1 month ticket (Monthly ticket £66.80) = £200.40** The total for the academic year will be £601.20** and a one off payment of £30** for your RailCard.

If you travel between Brighton or Preston Park from/to:
Burgess Hill, Hassocks, Haywards Heath and West Worthing.
The cheapest ticket to/from the above stations can be purchased with a Sussex Student Card, which gives you 34% off rail season tickets (minimum £30.80** per month). The application form can be downloaded from www.westsussex.gov.uk or collected from the Welfare Office. Tickets can be purchased from www.southernrailwaytickets.com/further-ed/ 7 days in advance of travel, 14 days in advance over Christmas/Easter periods.

Burgess Hill to Preston Park:
Each term you will be entitled to a 3 month ticket (less 34% Sussex Student Card) = £201.50** The total for the academic year will be £604.50**

Hassocks to Preston Park:
Each term you will be entitled to a 3 month ticket (less 34% Sussex Student Card) = £166.52** The total for the academic year will be £499.56**

Haywards Heath to Preston Park:
Each term you will be entitled a 3 month ticket (less 34% Sussex Student Card) = £272.25** The total for the academic year will be £816.75**

West Worthing to Brighton:
Each term you will be entitled to a 3 month ticket (less 34% Sussex Student Card) = £338.84** The total for the academic year will be £1016.52**

Worthing to Brighton:
Each term you will be entitled to a 3 month ticket (less 34% Sussex Student Card) = £313.30** The total for the academic year will be £939.90**

If students travel from/to any other station or area not mentioned above, then we will assess your individual entitlement and inform you in writing.
If you also have to travel more than 2 miles to your nearest station then we will cover the costs of your Plusbus ticket. You will receive an additional £10 per week, term time only, to help with travel costs.

TRAVEL BY  BUS 

If you live and travel within the Brighton and Hove area, your travel allowance will be in the form of a Bus Pass:
Students are required to have a Brighton and Hove Bus Key Card which can be obtained from the One Stop Travel Shop on 24 North Street, Brighton BN1 1EB or online at www.buses.co.uk. Other bus operators may not accept Key Cards, so a payment equivalent to a 3 month Bus pass each term, will be paid into your bank account instead. .
