History of Art

The study of art gives students valuable knowledge of world civilisations and helps them develop analytical skills that can be applied to understand how paintings, sculpture and architecture work to shape our social identities. This course allows students to develop particular interests and students will be encouraged to research and investigate art through first-hand experience.

TOPICS INCLUDED

Year 1

You will study painting, sculpture and architecture and focus on two themes:

  • Identities in art and architecture
  • War in art and architecture

Year 2

You will study two periods:

  • Invention and illusion: the Renaissance in Italy (1420-1520)
  • Pop life: British and American contemporary art and architecture (1960-2015)

Career Pathways

Students can progress to Art History and related courses at university, as well as a wide range of other courses. The course is also excellent preparation for a career as a gallery curator, an archivist, a conservationist, a teacher or a publisher amongst other roles.

What are the Standard Entry Requirements?

IB Diploma or 4 A levelsA mixture of at least 7 GCSEs at Grades 9 – 6 including English, Maths and Science.
3 A LevelsA mixture of at least 6 GCSEs at Grades 9 – 4 including English.
A mixed programme at Level 3, to include at least one vocational courseA mixture of at least 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 – 4 including English.
Foundation Level (Level 2)At least 4 GCSEs at Grade 3, including English. At least one GCSE should be at Grade 4 or above.
Any student who has not achieved a grade 4 or C in GCSE English and/or Maths must include further study of these subjects in their programme.
