Science (Applied)
If you enjoyed science at school and want to increase your specialist knowledge and understanding in a practical context that closely tracks the science that professionals use in the work place, then this is the course for you.
The new Alternative Academic Qualification which has replaced BTEC Applied Science is a two-year course equivalent to one A level. It is different to an A level in science, as there is a greater emphasis on practical laboratory work and also 50% of the course is assessed by exams and 50% based on coursework.
TOPICS COVERED
• Biology – biological molecules, enzymes
• Chemistry -Periodic table, physical and chemical properties of substances
• Physics- Waves, Forces and their application to transportation and electrical circuits
• Practical Scientific Procedures including colorimetry, chromatography
Plus, one other unit which the college will select out of:
• Science Investigation Skills which involve an investigative research task
• Contemporary Scientific Issues

Courses Available
Single AAQ Level 3 (equivalent to 1 A Level)
PLUS
Grade 5 in GCSE Biology and another Science
Or
Grade 5/5 in GCSE Combined Science
Career Pathways
Applied Science goes well with other subjects such as Mathematics and 3D Design to progress to Engineering, or Geography to progress to Geography or Environmental science courses. It will also allow progression to a Degree in Applied Sport and Exercise Science, Nursing or Secondary Science Education.
Transferable Skills
Data analysis (including use of IT); problem solving; producing balanced ethical arguments; practical scientific laboratory skills, scientific literacy; teamwork and research skills.
