Additional Learning Support

Additional Support is a supportive environment where our team of Learning Support Assistants work with students to achieve their potential. We have experience working with learners with a range of learning needs, including autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD/ADD, mobility issues and sensory needs. Our goal is to support students to become as independent as possible in their studies and give them the tools they need to succeed at college and in life.
Supported Study Sessions
The aim of Supported Study Sessions is to enhance independent learning and develop study skills. Students can bring their coursework and work independently with access to a support tutor. The sessions are small, with a maximum of ten students and are available every morning in the Additional Support Department.
Individual Support
Individual support is tailored to specific learning needs. This may include 1:1 support, in-class support or the provision of a quiet space at break times. This support will be fully discussed, agreed and reviewed with students on an individual basis.
Exam Arrangements
Students who need access arrangements in exams will be invited to an assessment session in the Additional Support Department at the beginning of term. It is important that you let us know about previous exam arrangements on your application form, at interview or you can speak to a Access Arrangements Assessor in Additional Support.
Access Arrangements for Examinations Deadline.
  • The JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) deadline for Access Arrangements for examinations in May/June is 21st February.
  • The deadline for centre-based access arrangements is the 26th March.

Health & Wellbeing

The Health & Wellbeing Service is part of the Additional Support Department and will help direct you to the most appropriate support, including,

Wellbeing Enrichment: Our Wellbeing Co-ordinator and team of Wellbeing assistants teach mindful strategies that enhance learning, alleviate anxious thoughts and boosts students’ ability to build more resilience.

Peer Mentoring: Peer mentors are a group of students who’ve been at college for at least a year and have been trained to provide friendly, dependable support to fellow students, particularly around managing the change from school to college.

Counselling: Our fully trained and qualified counsellors offer short term counselling. They are experienced at working with students in one-to-one confidential counselling sessions.

Wellbeing Zone – ‘A Safe Place to Be’: Re-focus in a calm environment. Wellbeing support is timetabled for certain times in the week.
