OFTSTED inspectors have recently given Varndean College a glowing report, confirming it once again as a good college. Inspectors found a “significant amount” of teaching, learning and assessment to be “outstanding,” including all Visual Arts courses. Major strengths identified by the inspectors included:
- Enthusiastic and skilled teachers plan and deliver lessons in a thoughtful and imaginative way, enabling students to be successful.
- Students appreciate the strong support from staff which promotes learning and enables students to develop positive working relationships with each other.
- Students enjoy coming to College and going to lessons and this is reflected in the high attendance.
- The overall quality of teaching, learning and assessment is good and a significant amount is outstanding. This reflects the college’s ethos of maintaining a strong focus on learning for all students and staff.
The inspection team also praised the very successful International Baccalaureate Diploma course:
“In 2011/12, all students completing the course passed and the average diploma score per student was very high compared to national and international averages”.
Describing Varndean College as very inclusive, a key finding of inspectors was: “the significant extent to which students make better than expected progress” and that “many students achieve better than would be expected from their starting points”. Inspectors noted the “large number going on to prestigious universities”. This year 12 students took up places at Oxford or Cambridge. In addition Inspectors said that “students benefit from “abundant teaching and learning resources” and classrooms “packed with thoughtfully chosen visual resources”.
Phil Harland, College Principal said “I am delighted the Inspectors recognised that my staff “provide exemplary individual support for students” because this is at the heart of Varndean’s inclusive ethos. They also saw that in managing the College we put students first”. I am immensely proud of this report and of my staff for making Varndean College such a great place to study.”
Janice Robinson the Chair of Governors added “Ofsted inspectors clearly recognized that staff at Varndean College provide young people in Brighton and Hove with a good quality sixth form education. Varndean College serves the city well and that is something that I value greatly, as do other governors and staff at the College”.
Student Governor and President of the Varndean College Student Union, Teiba Khawaja, said “I am so pleased that I came to Varndean College, it is such a nice place to be. I love it.”
