The Politics Department was delighted to receive a visit from The Earl of Lytton last week. Around thirty Politics A Level students attended the talk by Lord Lytton, who is one of 92 hereditary peers who sit in the House of Lords. He spoke about the role of the House of Lords in British democracy and some of the reforms that it has gone through in his lifetime.
The students asked a range of questions about topics such as Lord Lytton’s thoughts on further reform of the Lords and his views on the monarchy. It was a fantastic opportunity to get an insider’s view of the important constitutional role played by the House of Lords. Prior to this session with Lord Lytton, the students had taken part in online question and answer sessions with two life peers from the Lords, Baroness Wilcox and Baroness Pitkeathy. We are extremely grateful to all three peers for taking time out of their busy schedules to talk politics with our students.
Programme Lead for Politics, Cathy Bryan, said: “Having a real life Lord in the classroom was a fantastic way of bringing our study of Parliament to life.”
