Varndean College becomes a Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training

Varndean College is delighted to announce that it is now a lead partner of the Brighton and Hove Sussex Schools and College Alliance (BHSSCA) alongside the University of Sussex.

The programme is dedicated to fostering the next generation of outstanding educators and our collaboration with the University of Sussex ensures that student teachers receive top-class educational theory and practice, supported by a university renowned for its research in teaching.

As part of BHSSCA, we emphasise innovative teaching strategies and inclusivity, equipping our trainees with the skills needed to succeed in today’s diverse classroom environments.  Student teachers will gain hands-on extensive experience in partner schools and colleges, working alongside experienced teachers who offer real-world insights and mentorship.  We will offer a comprehensive career development pathway, including job placements, interview preparation, and continuous professional support during and after training.

There will be several flexible training pathways, including

  • The Sixth Form PGCE
  • Sussex School Choice PGCE
  • The PGTA (postgraduate teaching apprenticeship)

The Government is offering tax-free bursaries of up to £29,000 and scholarships up to £31,000 in a wide range of subjects.  Details of these and how to apply will be available from on our website in the very near future.
