On 29 April, Varndean College hosted a very successful talk from Rampion Offshore Wind Farm, one of the largest employers in the South Coast of 'green jobs' and one of the largest suppliers of renewable energy in the region.

The talk was part of the Carbon Literacy Qualification, which the college is offering with over 100 students currently awaiting certification in the first round of the qualification being delivered.

Students were also provided with information on how the wind turbines are designed and constructed discussing the crucial work of geologists, marine biologists, environmental scientists as well as engineers. The talk enabled students to understand more about how wind energy is produced and distributed along the Sussex coastline to the south east region. This was of particular interest to our Engineering students.

Information was also provided on the variety of career opportunities that are available in the green energy sector. This was of particular interest to those seeking work experience and apprenticeship opportunities.

The offshore wind power industry also offers a wide variety of other career opportunities other than just engineering, from design, finance, marketing, public relations, technology, building, education and communications to name a few.

The talk also provided further information on 'green jobs' that was of particular interest to students studying environmental sustainability and CLQ students who want to make a valuable contribution and a difference to the current energy crisis in non-renewable supplies by working in the green economic sector.
