Varndean College is a co-educational Sixth Form college currently catering for around 1200 full-time students, including 50 mature students on Access courses, plus 1200 adults on evening courses. Varndean College is situated close to the beautiful Sussex downs overlooking the resort of Brighton.

Biology Cover Teacher

FTE: 0.80

Start date: asap

Salary: £25.34 p/h

An opportunity has arisen for a skilful and energetic practitioner to join our successful Biology team to provide cover whilst the permanent post holder is on sick leave. You’ll be teaching mainly A2 to A level but might also be asked to contribute to our BTEC Programme and the International Baccalaureate.

Varndean College is now recruiting to its existing team of exam invigilators to oversee and supervise students during the summer 2017 exam period. As part of our pool of invigilators you may also be called upon at various times of the year to assist us with exam invigilation.


The summer exam period runs from Monday 15th May – Friday 30th June (excluding half term Monday 29th May – Friday 2nd June). You will need to be available for the key exam periods from Monday 15th May – Friday 16th June. You will work a morning or an afternoon session, or both if you prefer. The crucial dates (when all hands to the pump are required) are:

            Thursday 25th May (am)

            Tuesday 6th June (am)

            Thursday 8th June (am)

            Monday 12th June (am)

The role of invigilator involves supervising examinations according to examination board Regulations, distributing question and answer papers, ensuring that the students enter and leave exam halls calmly, and dealing with student queries. Invigilators are expected to approach the job in a serious and professional manner with emphasis on punctuality and reliability. They should also have the ability to communicate effectively with people.

The post is paid at a rate of 7.90 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay). Hours will vary depending on the number of examinations and the number of students taking these exams each day.

All invigilators are required to have an enhanced criminal records check (DBS disclosure). If you have not got one of these, the college will process one for you.

If you are selected to join the team, you will be required to attend a mandatory paid training/induction session on either Wednesday 26th April or Friday 28th April at 2:30 pm.
